China’s August EV Best-Sellers Include Several Models Sold in Nepal

China’s electric vehicle market continued to be dominated by battery-electric models in August, with nine of the top 10 positions in the country’s passenger-car sales ranking occupied by EVs.

Interestingly, several of the models that topped the Chinese sales chart are already available in Nepal.

The Geely EX2 led China’s overall passenger-car market in August with 39,651 units sold, making it the best-selling model for the month. The compact electric hatchback is also sold in Nepal, although under a different brand, as the Proton e.MAS 5, which is a rebadged version of the Geely EX2.

The Leapmotor A10 ranked second with 30,652 units. In Nepal, the same model but with different specifications is available as the Leapmotor B03X, giving Nepalese buyers access to one of China's strongest-selling new EVs.

The Tesla Model Y followed in third place with 29,260 units, while other EVs among China's August best-sellers included the BYD Atto 2, Deepal Nevo Q05 and BYD Dolphin — all models that are already available in the Nepalese market.

The performance of the Geely EX2 is particularly noteworthy. It has also become the best-selling Chinese EV in China in the first eight months of 2026, recording 266,166 units between January and August.

The Tesla Model Y follows with 226,931 units, while the Li Auto i6 stands third with 152,845 units. Tesla was the only automaker to place two models in China's August top 10. Alongside the Model Y in third, the Model 3 ranked sixth with 20,787 units.

The Xiaomi SU7 dropped from fourth place in July to 10th in August, recording 17,728 units. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi YU7 SUV fell to 19th with 13,635 units.

The August ranking underlines the scale of China's shift towards electric vehicles. Nine of the top 10 models were BEVs, with the only exception being the BYD Fang Cheng Bao Ti7, which is offered in both BEV and PHEV versions. Around 55% of its August sales were the fully electric variant.

For Nepal, the ranking is particularly interesting because several of China's current best-selling EVs have already made their way into our market.  From the Geely EX2-based Proton e.MAS 5 and Leapmotor A10-based B03X to the BYD Atto 2, Deepal Nevo Q05 and BYD Dolphin, Nepalese buyers are already seeing some of the models gaining strong traction in China.
